It's Raining, It's Pouring, the Young Boy is Snoring

I can't help but question how and when it was that my lovely little south-western town was removed to the soggy north-west. Ugh! Now, I enjoy a good rainstorm as much as the next, especially for their scarcity, but a week full of rain is more than enough! I miss you sunshine. Come home to your sunny south.

As for the snoring boy, Tomy had a cold a few weeks ago and when the cold left it left a little snore to remember it by. Ugh again! I never thought I'd be quite so stressed by a little snoring, but I find myself getting all tense as I listen to him softly snoring. I think I'll try some children's Mucinex to clear out whatever's stuck in his head. Any other ideas?

Nightmares Before Christmas

While there are plenty of downsides to having a family bed, there are also many perks. One of these being that one gets to hear what the kids say in their sleep. For example, this morning Tomy sang, "Humpty Dumpty had a grateful day," before he resumed his snoring.

Hazel must be experiencing a little more yuletide disquiet as her sleep talking has been much less lighthearted. Last night she started crying and then shouted, "Don't take my 'pizmas tree!'" The night before played out in a similar fashion but with the words, "[You] can't have my candy!"

In other bizarre holiday stress news, Tomy got so worked up yesterday about not being able to open some Christmas presents that he wanted to "move out of our house" and cancel "Christmas for the whole Earth."  After much drama and displays of hysterics, we put the seductive presents away - out of sight, out of mind. And thus peace is restored to the Gubler's holiday season.

Montgomery Family Blog

FYI: Mom just came back from the Montgomery Christmas party with the info for a new family site. Everyone can put up information, pictures, and stuff. If you want to post something, contact my mom for the sign in and password. I took the liberty of adding a blog list for Grandma's family. If you don't want your site listed, I can fix it. I also didn't add the private or never-updated blogs to the list.

I hope you are all having a LOVELY holiday season!

Economic Advice

Ha ha! I'm definitely not the one to give economic advice, nor am I extremely likely to listen to any :) but I have made an amazing, even life changing, observation. I have found the key to getting a job in today's sluggish economy. Unbelievable, but true. And I am willing to share that secret with you - free of charge!

They secret key is this: commit to being a stay home mom and the jobs will start landing in your lap. No more filling out hundreds of applications to no avail.  People will start contacting YOU with amazing opportunities that seem impossible to turn down. Of course, the trick is that you DO turn them down, because, well, you're committed to being a stay home mom. How's that for irony? :o)

Getting Our Christmas On

It's Christmas time and the children are in seventh heaven! The nativities are on prominent display (out of reach of chubby hands), the village is arranged (by the chubby hands), the Christmas tree is up (mine is still undecorated, but the tree of the chubby handed ones is LOADED!), and Y'tol Elf - our Elf on the Shelf - has made his appearance (not to be touched by chubby hands else his magic disappears!).

The kids also got to be on Grandpa G.'s (award winning!) mail truck float in the WinterFest light parade. Grandpa looked great with hair on his head - even if it was white :) and the grandkids had a lovely time being his helper elves.

Music has been another source of excitement for our little ones. Tomy spends a lot of the day either asking me to sing the right words to "Jingle Bell Rock" or repeatedly singing "Christmas time is here. Christmas time is here, Christmas time is here." He gets pretty excited when he hears a new Christmas song, which is all the time when we're driving with 98.1 FM. Today it was a song by the Mangoes (aka the Beach Boys... yeah, I don't really get it either, but Tomy reports that they're his favorite.) The astonishing thing has been his quick learning of the primary Christmas songs. Usually it takes him a very long time to pick up lyrics, but he keeps surprising me with how much of the songs he knows with such (relatively) limited exposure to the songs.

I wonder what other thrills the season has in store? Here's hopin' yours is merry and bright!

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

Not even a jacket?! Not after 10 A.M. Woo hoo! I LOVE Southern Utah!

I found this rock on an outing today. Doesn't it have to most lovely shades of green? I also LOVE green - and igneous rocks - they're a favorite too.

Could the day get much better? Yes - Levi made dinner :)

Rainy Day and Monday

As I took Tomy to school this morning, my senses thrilled at the crisp Autumn air and the fresh scent of our rain-washed desert. Luckily Levi was home for the morning, so Hazel, Daddy, and I headed out for an impromptu little hike up the hill. We started at the bottom La Verkin Overlook trail head where we found this picturesque driveway. It was much too leaf-strewn-lovely to pass by without a photo.

The rain darkened lava rocks made for great exploring. We found little pools and fuzzy, varicolored mosses. Can you spot Hazel and Levi posing in the first of these two pictures?

We made our way up to "The Boot" where, evidently, there is not a lot of love for "Steph F." These smiles are telling you we're glad Mom didn't fall to her doom.

This is the view afforded us after climbing out the top of the boot. Our house is located somewhere just left of center - a wee bit past the steeple.

We encountered this abandoned farm gear as we neared our vehicle (see background of picture) and the end of our journey. What you don't see in this picture is Hazel's bleeding chin. After disregarding several warnings, she trippety-tripped down the trail, landing chin first on a rock (traumatic - but she's one tough cookie!)

And that is that. The End.

P.S. Can I just say that I'm not a huge fan of formatting pictures with the recent formatting upgrade? It's nice that I can change their sizes without re-uploading them, but they don't like sitting side by side any more. Maybe I'm missing the trick. If anyone knows it, PLEASE share. :)

Yummy to My Tummy

We enjoyed our first pomegranate syrup of the season this morning and it was DELICIOUS! Oh how I love that pomegranate bush and its edible jewels! Now for the best solution for juicing pomegranates (and we've tried many, many methods!): it is to squeeze a quartered pomegranate in a fruit juicer/press that looks something like this. Make sure it has a large enough opening to fit the large fruit and is sturdy enough to deal with the crusty outside and your in business. I recommend visiting pomwonderful.com for fun, creative, unusual pomegranate recipes.

If You're Happy and You Know It

I can always tell when I'm feeling happy because I spontaneously sing random songs. It gets quite interesting to see what songs come outta my mouth. Last week, when my nephew & niece stayed over, I found myself singing "How Deep Is Your Love," "Latter-day Prophets," and some wordless tune from Legend of Mana. Our other house guest probably thought I was a tad nuts, but I was just content - everything was right in my world. The point of all this - my sister should visit way more often! :)

Uncanny

What inexplicable phenomenon alerts my children to their mother's imminent slumber? It matters not when I choose to go to bed; whether it's 9 PM or 2 AM, they will sleep soundly until I just start to drift off and then it's all up with the crying. If it only happened once in a while, I'd write it off as coincidence, but it happens EVERY night! I suppose I should think it a bit miraculous that they are so aware of me (just like they are aware of every button they can push to send me through the roof) but I'm more likely to feel exasperated and slightly infringed upon. It seems there is no bubble of independence for a mother - only the illusion thereof. Everything she is and can do and learns is ultimately promised to the rearing of the beautiful, terrible, wonderful creatures she birthed. *sigh* I just wish this weren't true for the five minutes it takes to truly fall asleep.

Dora and Boots

Otherwise titled: The Search Is On... And On... And On...

When asked what he wanted to be for Halloween, Tomy initially stated that he wanted to be a dragon. Of course, he's already been a dragon, so he changed his mind daily until Hazel had a grand idea. She would be Dora and he would be Boots. At first I was leery of him changing his mind again, but it turned out to be quite set, and so I whipped up a couple costumes.

Tomy's is just a sweat suit purchased at Kmart a few sizes small so it'd fit tightly (umm.. can we say 18 mos? yeah, my little boy is little) with a bit of yellow and gray fleece sewn on. I searched high and low for red boots - the integral part of the ensemble - but to no avail (honestly, no red boots, galoshes, snow boots?! You've got to be kidding me!) So we hot glued some red pleather to Hazel's snow boots. Why Hazel's boots, you ask? Because we couldn't find Tomy's boots ANYWHERE and he was so desperate that he forcibly squeezed his feet into them to prove that we could make them work.

Dora was also pretty stinkin' easy to make. It's hard to go wrong with a pink shirt and orange shorts combo that were both found on clearance. Dora's yellow socks were a bit trickier and I ended up sewing some yellow rick-rack to her white socks. They turned out pretty cute, but notice how they are not pictured. This is because they went AWOL and just turned up today. Of course, Dora just isn't Dora without Backpack and Map, so this happy birthday girl got her accessorizing wish fulfilled in the form of a plush purple wonder wrapped in the manila bubble envelope it arrived in from Amazon. So, one would think my Dora and her new Backpack would be INSEPARABLE, but no. In the time it took to find her shoes (which admittedly took quite a while) to go to Tomy's Head Start Halloween Party, she had completely lost backpack. It was nowhere to be found and we looked everywhere at least ten times ("Ardoo Packpack... ardoo?"). It was missing for DAYS! Amazingly I found it an hour before Trick or Treating on Saturday - phew!

So this is my happy pair on Saturday evening all prepped for an exciting evening of candy gathering. I was finally finished with my unending search for stray shoes, socks, backpacks, boots, etc. and their search for goodies was about to begin.

And this is their haul. They were such a perfect age for Halloween this year. They were excited all month and wore their costumes ALL THE TIME. Also, previous years have ended quickly with toddler meltdowns, but this year they knew what was what and happily climbed in and out of the car to visit all the grandparents. So after only 5 stops, a couple neighbors, and some sweet-faced "trick-or-treats," they were content with returning home. Oh if it'd always be that easy!

Of course, Halloween isn't just about the costumes, but also the decorations. I never did get everything put out how I wanted, but I did want to show off my spooky curtains in the living room. My three arched windows got their spooky on with this creepy fabric I got at a yard sale (a buck for the bolt!!!) a year or so ago. The black fabric was pretty weak and shredded well, but it took a bit of ingenuity to get it into the windows. In the end, I hot glued it in place and it looked perfect. Of course, taking it down has become problematic, but... *shrug*

So here's hoping you had a spooktacular Halloween and that you've picked up some great deals on the after Halloween clearance - I know I have!

An Unfortunate First

For the first time in 31 years (at least, to my memory) I have no idea what I want to be for Halloween. Any great ideas?

Friday, October 1, 2010

Dear Mother Eve,

I was contemplating today whether you had as hard a time keeping your promise to obey your husband as I do. It seemed to me like such an innocuous promise to make, but I find that it is much harder to practice than I originally thought. I'm betting you took it much more seriously than I, or did you?

I'm sure that we're similar in finding our spouses to be handsome, handy, intelligent, good, capable, trustworthy, etc., but did you find it difficult to always be submissive? I think perhaps I have had too many years of independence, too many roles as queen of the mountain that I sometimes find myself balking at following my husband's lead. For example, when I take my children to town, I am the one making decisions about where we're going, when we're eating, how we'll take care of potty breaks, etc. When the hubby joins us on excursions, I find it hard to turn over the reigns and support his choices about where we're going, when we're eating, and how we'll take care of potty breaks. It makes me anxious to not be in control, but to still be responsible for the welfare of the children. It is also rather awkward like trading ones walking shoes that fit like a glove for shoes that are a few sizes to big. I know it becomes my responsibility, as my husband's help meet, to make him aware of the needs of his family and give him possible solutions so he can choose how to fill them, but sometimes I feel like my comments come across as nagging, judging, and hag-alicious. I also start to feel frustrated when things don't go how I would like them.

So, I ask you Mother Eve, does it get any easier? After millenia of learning to work with Father Adam, has this whole communication and cooperation of disparate, but complimentary roles become as natural and effective in practice as it is in theory? I sure hope so.

Yours Eternally,
Saddie

Pro Choice?!

Choice. God's most important and most godlike gift given to his children. He even sacrificed 1/3 of his beloved offspring to assure that everyone was afforded a choice. It astounds and confounds me that people can slander the concept of choice - can twist it and defile it into meaning that abortion - murder - is a simple matter of a female's choice about her body.

Well, let me tell you, I am most definitely pro-choice, but not the kind of choice that conveniently relieves me of consequences made by previous choices. Some choices - murder, abuse, incest, etc. - are heinous! We, as children of God, are allowed to make them, but they should make the hearts of men revolt! In the case of abortion, a vast portion of our country's citizens have compartmentalized and devilified the idea until it's become a matter to be voted on. WHAT?! How desensitized have we become as a people to such perverse ideas, that the topic could even become a matter of debate? We should all feel, at the core of our being, that this practice is reprehensible and wrong. Our very soul should shake with disgust and outrage and a cry for justice.

So choice. Choice is a powerful and essential key to our very existence. We have the god-given right to choose, but we do not have the privilege of choosing or changing the consequences - good or bad. When someone chooses to shoot someone, the victim may or may not die or be seriously injured, but regardless the outcome, the shooter is responsible for his initial choice and the outcome thereof. When someone chooses to drink and drive, he may or may not cause a fatal accident, but the drunk driver is liable regardless the result. When someone chooses to involve themselves sexually with another person, the partner does not get to control whether the outcome of that choice is pregnancy or otherwise, but he is responsible for it nonetheless.

Satan would have us believe that sex is a casual, recreational thing - that it's no big deal. He is preaching this lie to our families, friends, total strangers, everyday in every way he can imagine - and he's got quite the imagination. But sex is not casual. The choice to participate in sexual intercourse is, essentially, a choice to have a child with your sexual partner. Now does that sound casual to you?

Now, I hear some of you saying, "What about rape and sexual abuse." We are all allowed our choices, and sometimes it seems that our freedom of choice is stolen from us by people who would inflict their will upon us - but it's not. No human can really take away our right to choose. They can affect our available choices, but we each get to make our own choice from the options available us. In the case of rape, I would propose that the options to adopt or keep the baby are the available choices, rather than the choice to murder a child. That said, I admit that I am definitely not in a position to judge someone who's undergone such a traumatic event(s).

Anywho, I watched this powerful and moving clip on facebook (and suggest that you do to) and felt that it afforded a great opportunity to share my view on the topic. I have thought about it quite a bit since a few years ago when one of my liberal, teenage students asked me whether I was "pro-choice" or "pro-life." The question left me speechless, because I knew my answer, politically speaking, was pro-life. But the power of the words pro-choice knocked me over. After all, my fundamental religious beliefs hinge on choice. It took me a couple breaths to realize what Satan had done in perverting such a powerful truth into such a powerful excuse for inexcusable crimes.

Camping at Kolob

The end of the summer found us camping with the Farnsworths and the Beattys at Kolob lake. While we were there we saw an owl, ate yummy food, made fairy houses, played with some dogs, and got really dirty. It was a short trip (I think preparing to go camping took longer than the actual camping trip:), but the weather was perfect and the company enjoyable. Unfortunately, my camera's battery died so here are the few pictures we managed to get.

A Cute Girl

This funny girl has wanted to learn to go potty on the toilet since Tomy potty trained last New Year. I told her she needed to wait until we moved. Well, now that we've unpacked most of the boxes, I suppose it's time to bust out the pretty panties. Wish us luck - we're gonna need it!

In other news, the cute kitty pictured above, must have had enough of Hazel's "affection" because after visiting our house for a few days, it is nowhere to be seen. Levi and I are not exactly sad about his moving on.

Lastly, this Hazel girl likes to call Tomy "Pomy" (much to Tomy's chagrin) and her tummy "pummy." She also just got a wad of toilet paper stuck up her nose. FUN FUN FUN!

Hiking the River Walk

Well, I finally emptied the pictures off our camera from before we moved - now to get caught up on some blog posts...

Just before school started, we hiked the River Walk courtesy of another national park free fee weekend. Last time we went to Zion it was too blustery cold to go up the canyon, but this time it was hot and sunny - perfect for a walk by/in the river.

We started out with a little snack by the entrance.

Then we "hiked" to the bus. Hazel insisted on wearing her new backpack.

On our hike we encountered squishy mud, pollywogs, baby fish, weird worms, and lizards.

We also met this fearless squirrel who enjoyed eating our trail mix. He sat and ate his nut just inches from my feet. He was one of the many FAT squirrels along the trail begging food from tourists and posing for pics.

Let's not forget the unforgettable views!

Notice that Mom and Dad our now shouldering the backpacks AND the children. Hazel now associates riding on ones shoulders with hiking and gleefully sings her new song about it.

I made it up impromptu while we were hiking to the tune of "We Are Pioneers" and Hazel wouldn't let me stop singing it. You have to love her attempts at singing "we are Gublers."

It was a long hike for the two little ones, but we finally made it to the end. We had fun playing in the river. The kids kept running back and forth between Dad on the shore and Mom in the river.

And then it was time to hike the whole way back.

The best (and most random) part of our adventure was all the people we saw there. The bus driver (both up and down the canyon) was a friend and coworker from my college days working summers at a gift shop in Springdale. I hadn't seen her since just before Levi and I got married. Also on the bus, Levi and I started chatting with a family behind us sporting T-Bird gear only to figure out that they were Levi's Webelos leaders from way back in the day. One of their kids there was only just born when Levi was their scout. We also met Levi's cousin Rachel hiking with some friends, but that's not quite so random.

All in all, we had a pretty great -not to mention exhausting- day at the Park.

I Feel a Surge of Deep Satisfaction!

(Name that movie.)

Today; after three days of sorting, completing, faxing, mailing, and calling; I am finally caught up with a summer's worth of put-off paperwork. Woo hoo! It's so nice to finally be settling in after a summer of chaos.

A Pleasant Surprise

My little boy has mastered the art of getting on my nerves. He knows all my crazy buttons and pushes them liberally.

And then... joy of joys... yesterday, out of nowhere, his mouth opened - not to whine, tattle, or complain - but to say, "I like you Mom!"

What? It took me a few seconds to process the unfamiliar phrase, but by the time he repeated himself I was grinning from ear to ear. "Thanks Tomy. I like you too!"

I guess being a mom has it's perks after all. :)

Dear August,

It's nothing personal, but my greatest wish is to see you go. I find you too full of things that require too much effort and after a summer full of unabated stress, I'm losing my cool. The mommy monster, though uninvited, has taken up permanent residency and marital bliss has been fraying around the edges. So August, to you I say, "GO AWAY!"

Now September, ahhhh September, with her many promise of relief - of belated vacations, of a husband who's not working night and day and weekend, of a school that's up and running, of a family finally moved into a home, of order renewed - she is very welcome.

Sincerely,
Saddie

PS Thank you for the stormy weather. It has brought a measure of true delight.

Toe Jam

It occurs to me that I must really enjoy the flavor of toe jam. This is evidenced by the fact that whenever I open my mouth, my foot is firmly stuck therein. I can only wonder what I was off doing in Heaven when they were handing out social skills, maybe waiting in the bizarre sense of humor line.

What's For Dinner?

You know, there once was a time when I really, truly enjoyed cooking - oh the thrill of creating something tasty and filling up the hungry places! I especially liked the challenge of making dinner from the random whatevers found in the relatively bare cupboard. Well that thrill has dissipated into the almost forgotten past. Now making meals tends to be a tedious affair that is unvaryingly punctuated with a more-than-painful reception at the dinner table. Let me tell you, it's enough to make a girl cry!

Oh food! How I love you! Why have you turned against me? What are the magic words that will renew our long-lost relationship? How can I convince my boys that you are a friend whose company is to be relished and savored in all its vast complexities? How can I turn the tides of fate and bitterness in favor of a healthy, happy dinner table?

Oh if I only knew...

A Tad Tardy

Serendipity just lead me to find these two unpublished posts from last year hanging out in my post list. They were just waiting for me to upload the funniest video clip of Tomy spraying the cousins with a hose - good stuff - but the file must have been too large to upload, and I must have been too lazy to abbreviate it. So now, a year later, I give you 4th of July, 2009 (sans video clip).

Finally, The Fourth (post 2)

I had this post ready to publish a week ago, but one of Levi's scouts managed to delete it entirely... so here we go again!

As mentioned before, Tomy's fun filled birthday made for a difficult Independence Day morning. We missed Grandpa Gubler's annual yummy breakfast and barely made it to the parade that was just outside the front door. How do you like his pajama shirt/soggy diaper/scary hair look? At least Hazel managed to get her cute festive wear on - though you can bet that pretty white dress didn't stay white for long.

After the parade, we headed to the park, but didn't make it out of the driveway due to the numerous emotional breakdowns of a distraught three year old. Instead, we spent the morning just being mellow and snuggling, thus happiness and functionality returned to the land of the Gublers in time for a quick, splish-splashy trip to Confluence Park with the cousins!

The late afternoon found the diaper clad cousins cooling off with the hose. Okay, so this clip is the sole reason for redoing this post. Not only is it super funny, it illustrates my number one favorite 4th of July traditions - WATER FIGHTS!

You'll just have to use your imagination on this one.

And thus, the eventful (and oh so emotional) day ended, of course, with fireworks. Ya, gotta love them! Tomas definitely enjoyed the magic of sparklers, but was quite ready to hit the sack before the last sky flower faded from the moonlit night.

Our Independence Day Outings (post 1: that which was supposedly erased.)

This is how our 4th began - sitting on the curb waiting for the parade. Yes, Tomy is wearing only his pajama shirt and diaper. As previously mentioned, we had a hard morning! We missed the breakfast Levi's dad cooked for us and the activities at the park. After the previous day's excitement, it was all just TOO MUCH for one boy to handle.

After a restful morning, though, we were ready and rarin' to go! Tomy joined Levi and Levi's fam on an excursion to confluence park and later, while Levi played ball in Hurricane the cousins had some more water fun. This was by far my FAVORITE part of the day!

This is how our 4th ended - as any good 4th of July should - lighting sparklers and fireworks at Grandpa's house. What a lovely holiday!
